Students helped pick up tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.

This year a community service project, “Help Us Pick Up the Tab” was sponsored by the 4th and 5th grade Union Intermediate Academically Gifted Students.

Teachers and students at UIS school collected pop-top tabs to be recycled and the money was contributed to the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill. The Ronald McDonald House provides a “Home away from Home” for families of seriously ill children who travel long distances to get medical treatment.

The contributions of funds help to provide a comfortable place for their families to stay, receive rest and support. This year UIS collected, recycled and contributed $55.80 to the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill.

This project not only encourage students to help with this worthwhile community project, but enhanced their science curriculum through recycle lessons and math skills also. Mrs. Wrampes’ student collected and counted their 11,437 tabs collected for the year. We are thankful to every class at UIS who collected the 124 pounds of pop-tab tabs.

The students plan to collect pop-top tabs through the summer and continue this service project in the upcoming school year. Thank you to everyone who helped with this effort and help if you can. You never know when you may be in need of this wonderful service!
